The rhizome and the roots of Jatamansi is a very popular herb in Ayurveda known for its therapeutic value in treating conditions such as epilepsy, convulsions, hysteria, mental weakness, insomnia and certain neurological disorders. Its roots are bitter and astringent dominant in taste, cooling in potency and its post digestion effect is sweet in taste. It is best in pacifying Pitta dosha, balances excess Kapha and Vata dosha thus making it an herb which can balance all the three doshas. It promotes strength and is useful in treating conditions in which increased Pitta and Vata dosha is afflicting the nervous system. This calming effect on the brain helps to slower down the hyperactivity and calm the hyper excitability of the mind. All this pharmacological action promotes sleep and helps the individual to have a relax mind which is very much necessary to go into a state of sleep.
The antiquity of this herb can be traced to the time of Atharva Veda around 800B.C. It is a very popular herb to enhance cognitive function, memory and for conditions like epilepsy and skin disorders. Leaves of this plant are bitter dominant in taste, cooling in potency and sweet in post digestion effect. It balances Vata and Pitta dosha. It has a very specific nourishing and pacifying action on nervous system thus delivering calming and tranquilizing effect on the mind. Roots of Tagar popularly known as Indian valerian is pungent, bitter and astringent in taste, hot in potency and pungent in post digestive effect. It balances all the three doshas but predominantly Vata and kapha dosha. Traditionally this herb is used for treating epilepsy, skin disorders, headache, colic pain, as analgesic and as antidote in insect and scorpion bites. Tagar because of its Vata pacifying qualities clams the nervous system and helps to induce sound sleep.
Seeds of Khurasini ova also known as stinking nightshade is used in Ayurveda to treat many diseases. It has unique properties similar to opium such as sedative, hypnotic, hallucinogenic, and narcotic. The alkaloid present in the entire plant can increase the heart rate and respiratory rate, dilation of pupil, and excitement hence it is always used in low dosage. It is Bitter, pungent in taste, hot in potency, and has pungent post digestive taste. It helps to improve digestion, appetite, helps well forming of stools and induces sleep. It is by all its properties, Vata and Kapha reducing. Therapeutically it is used in Ayurveda to treat renal stones, as analgesics in joint muscle pains, tumors, worms, and insomnia.
Due to its narcotic and sedative effect Khurasani ajwain is used for calming the mind and inducing sleep. In Unani medicine system the seeds of Khurasani ajwain are first detoxified and then only used. For this purpose, the seeds are soaked in vinegar for three consecutive nights and then dried and powdered.
Seeds of Jatiphal which is popularly known as Nutmeg is used in Indian culinary since ages for its aroma and flavor. By properties it is bitter and slightly pungent in taste, hot in potency and pungent in post digestive effect. By all its properties it pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha. It has analgesic effect and euphoric if consumed in large quantity. Jatiphal is used in Ayurveda as digestive tonic, improves appetite, is cardio tonic, and hence used to treat conditions such as anorexia, indigestion, diarrhea, dysentery and also as good aphrodisiac.
In small dose it is mood elevator, tranquilizer and relaxing. Stress and anxiety causes Vata dosha to aggravate. Jatiphal helps to calm the mind, pacify Vata dosha and thus useful in inducing sleep.
Sarpagandha or Indian snakeroot is widely used in traditional Ayurveda as analgesics and has a special action of sleep inducing as mentioned in scriptures as “Nidra prada”; It is bitter in taste, hot in potency and pungent in post digestion effect. By all its properties it is a very good herb to pacify vata and kapha dosha. It has a special action of inducing sleep irrespective of the effects it has on the doshas. It calms the hyperactive nervous system hence used in epilepsy, as analgesics, in mania, dizziness, vertigo and hypertension. For high blood pressure this herb is widely studied and is found to be very effective.
Whole plant of Dhamasa which is also known as Virgin’s mantle is used in Ayurveda for treating nausea, mouth ulcers, diarrhea, cough, fever and breathlessness. It is sweet, astringent and pungent in taste, cold in potency and sweet in post digestion effect. It shows Pitta dosha pacifying action primarily along with mild Kapha balancing effect.
Pitta aggravation can keep the mind active and engaged in chain of thoughts which may hinder the body going into resting mode of sleep. Dhamasa helps in balancing the pitta thus supports in promoting sound sleep.
Ayurveda emphasizes that liquids or any other medium consumed along with the herbs plays an important role in enhancing the action of that herbs. Different mediums like warm water, plain room temperature water, milk, buttermilk, honey or ghee, to name few are suggested by Ayurved physician as medium to be used while taking herbs or formulation.
For Resto as a sleep support the best medium suggested is cow’s milk warm or room temperature as per the climatic condition or as suggested by your physician. It can be 50 to 150 ml depending on the digestive strength.
